Steve Dowen

Having graduated from the University of Hull in 2020 with a First-Class degree in History, I returned to continue my studies Completing an MA in History at the University. My master’s thesis focused on the perception and constructed mythology of the navvies as a sub-class during the Victorian period with a hope to further the limited scholarly attention they have received, and to question preconceived notions of navvies and navvydom. I believe strongly in making history accessible, interesting, and relatable to everyone and is what attracted me to the TSRG.

As a marketing intern I work alongside Libertyhavana Chelsea and under the supervision of Matthias Wong. The internship offered an excellent opportunity to use the skills gained during my time at university, and to expand upon them by gaining marketing experience with a focus on digital marketing. I analyze differing marketing techniques for audiences from social media to academic circles; and from school children to the public. I also assist in researching information for content creation as well as marketing upcoming exhibitions.

Aside from marketing, the internship is helping me to learn about the history and impacts of colonialism, as well as helping to educate myself on indigenous groups all over the world.
